Series 3
The works in this series are constructed through casting a clear resin into a mold containing various magnets. A mixture of aluminum and iron filings are stirred into the resin before it sets. The mixture is then poured into the mold, and the filings align themselves to the magnetic fields in the mold.
Series 2
The works in this series are constructed through casting an amber resin into a mold containing various magnets. A mixture of various types of iron filings are stirred into the resin before it sets. The mixture is then poured into the mold, and the filings align themselves to the magnetic fields in the mold. This series are quite dark in composition, and the only way to see all of the subtle interactions is by placing a light behind the drawing.
Series 1
The works in this series display live magnetic fields. The green material is a commercial colloidal nickel film. The film is composed of a layer of plastic, a layer of a gelatin like material, and another layer of plastic. The center layer of gelatin has tiny nickle particles suspended inside of it. When a magnetic field is applied to the material the nickle particles twist within the gelatin, and align themselves to the field. Light reflecting off of the nickle particles, allow the field to be seen. Each of these drawings consist of magnets arranged on a steel substrate, the colloidal nickel film, and a sheet of plastic to protect the film.
